Your Guide To Neck Pain

Pain in the neck is just that, a pain in the bloody neck! In this guide I’ll talk through the obvious things to do if you’re struggling. The slightly less obvious and the rare things I have seen in clinic, but that you should consider if the usual suspects have been attempted.

Sound Like You? Here is What to Do…
  1. Stretch the neck – 10 Best Neck Pain Exercises/Stretches Ever Created. – YouTube
  2. Strengthen your neck muscles – Neck Strengthening Exercises (Easy to Hard) Good for Whiplash, Arthritis, etc. – YouTube
  3. Mix up your working day – be sure to not be sat at a computer all day, even just standing up briefly and sitting straight back down every 30 minutes has been shown to be of huge benefit relative to compression through the spine when compared to hours on end in the same position
  4. Have an eye test if you haven’t had one for a long time
IF These Don’t Work, Consider the Following…

Do you have a history or currently struggle with any spinal issues? Your spine is just one structure and although we like to think of the neck as an isolated part of the body, the reality is lower spinal motion can have a huge impact on the neck. This is known as Lovett reactor relationships.

Inefficient eye muscle control, poor jaw motion and tension through your diaphragm (the big dome muscle at the bottom of your ribcage) can all lead to discomfort, limitations and pain in the neck. If you grind your teeth, suffer migraines, tension around the eyes or have a history of any respiratory issues these all need to be considered

Does It Need to be More Complicated?

Maybe! When the nuances of motion, anatomy and neurology need to start being broken down that is where the real fun is for me. Your nervous system works in a whole host of interesting ways and pain is a fascinating subplot. However, if I am honest through the past decade plus of helping others the simple solutions are often the right ones.

I hope for your sake the simple ideas outlined above are enough to change the game, but if they’re not please get in touch.

We don’t need to reinvent the wheel, but we need to press the reset button.
